Last Days of DeWitt Godfrey’s Lincoln at DeCordova Connected Past and Future

Farewell Lincoln (150 feet long, Cor-Ten steel and bolts, installed 2012) events, October 22,2023:

“This low-lying, horizontal sculpture is composed of eighty variously sized and shaped cylinders that appear to spill down the hill from the Museum building to a tree below. Made specifically for the Sculpture Park’s front lawn, Lincoln conforms to the landscape’s gentle curves and encourages visitors to pass through its tunnel-like apertures.” ( quote from Trustees, deCordova Sculpture Park, Lincoln )

“DeWitt Godfrey is a large-scale sculptor working in Hamilton, NY.  His work employs carefully conceived structural processes, combining cutting edge digital technologies with custom craftsmanship, all grounded in empirical knowledge and experimentation. Natural geometries and systems – plant spores, seashells, honeycombs – inspire his sculptures; and through his unique process of packing and stacking conic and cylindrical steel forms, simple rules give rise to extraordinary complexity.”( quote from Alexandria Artist Reception, October 2023)

De-installing Lincoln, October 23, 2023:

It is simpler for me to select from photos of two final days with Lincoln than from so many moments through more than a decade of great days in deCordova Sculpture Park! I hope to do a future post with some significant overview of Lincoln, plus other newer artworks by DeWitt Godfrey. One consolation now: though Lincoln has gone, its numerous cylinders can become parts of exciting new sculptures in other alluring destinations.
