Massiel Grullon’s Mural, “Knotical Waves” Relates to Lots of Art at Lot Lab in Charlestown

My photos from the June opening of Lot Lab focus on Massiel Grullon’s mural with informative quotes from NOW+THERE. This summer I hope to post sequels to focus on artworks for Lot Lab by Ghada Amer and Sam Fields.

“Lot Lab (steps from the Charlestown Navy Yard ) is transforming an unused lot with site-specific contemporary art installations into a vibrant, free, 24/7 “laboratory” for art + community now (early June ) through October 31, 2023.” ( quote from NOW+THERE, Lot Lab)

With three large-scale art installations reflecting a theme of “mending” by international artist Ghada Amer, and Boston-area artists Sam Fields, and Massiel Grullon, Lot Lab creates an artistically-infused community gathering space along the waterfront that connects Boston to the globe.( quote from NOW+THERE, Lot Lab )

“Knotical Waves,” created by Boston-based artist and educator Massiel Grullon, is a site-specific ground mural inspired by Lot Lab’s history, environment, and geography.“( quote from Massiel Grullon – “Knotical Waves” — NOW AND THERE)

This mural features undulating geometric lines in Grullon’s signature retro-influenced supergraphic style. The design is informed by simple, pulsating line work used to represent water in historic plans of the Hoosac Tunnel Dock.“( quote from Massiel Grullon – “Knotical Waves” — NOW AND THERE)

“Its green and yellow-hued color gradient is pulled directly from the Boston harbor waters, bringing the natural tones of the waterfront to the Hoosac lot’s industrial brick and asphalt surfaces.”( quote from Massiel Grullon – “Knotical Waves” — NOW AND THERE)

“Visitors will also find a silhouette of the U.S.S Constitution riding the waves and perhaps see how the mural’s knotted lines allude to nautical ropes.”( quote from Massiel Grullon – “Knotical Waves” — NOW AND THERE)

Boston-based artist Massiel Grullon is an alumnus of Boston Arts Academy; Massiel created art at an early age. She was heavily involved in art projects and collaborative murals in the Boston art community. She continued to follow her passion, completing her bachelor’s degree in painting & graphic design at Montserrat College of Art in 2014. Massiel is now an independent working artist doing freelancing, design/fine arts, and murals. She is also a Mentor teaching painting at Artists For Humanity in South Boston, MA. ” ( quote from Now and There, Meet Massiel Grullon )

“Massiel works primarily in fine art and design. Creating nostalgic, harmonious, and interactive work, Massiel produces paintings of portraits, abstract, graphic design, and murals. Most of her work is made of retro-inspired designs expressed through different mediums such as oil, acrylic, interior/exterior paint, and digital. Massiel is fascinated with mid-century and space-age architecture and interior furniture design, which is apparent in her style of work.” ( quote from Now and There, Meet Massiel Grullon )
