Here is yet another impressive mural by Sophy Tuttle that I must revisit! I’ll aim for more comprehensive photos plus better understanding of the structures, symbols, and concepts that connect its full length of 190 feet! Then I’ll want to revisit often for the pleasures of the whole painting along the wall of 30 Dane Street in Somerville.

Meanwhile I urge anyone who might be in Cambridge or Somerville to include the mural in a local walk, run, or bike ride, guided by these few selected quotes.

“Located at the Somernova innovation and technology complex outside of Union Square, a stunning 190’ long mural was unveiled along the exterior of the Rafi Properties building leased to Form Energy, a firm involved in research and development of cutting-edge clean battery technology. The name of the richly colored mural is “Forming a Better Future.” (quote from Mark Favermann, Arts Fuse, August Short Fuses — Materia Critica 2024)

“Taking about a month to complete, the mural skillfully depicts rare regional species of flora and fauna threatened by energy extraction. The lineup includes bees, puffins, and the Ram’s Head Lady’s Slipper orchid.”(quote from Mark Favermann, Arts Fuse, August Short Fuses — Materia Critica 2024)

“Using a hexagonal pattern as a structural basis, Tuttle has installed an elegant color gradient that moves from dark to light across the facade of the building. The pictorial symbolizes how climate tech innovators are creatively initiating a way forward for a brighter and more resilient future.” (quote from Mark Favermann, Arts Fuse, August Short Fuses — Materia Critica 2024)

“The mural’s hexagonal pattern, inspired by Greentown Labs’ logo and Form’s battery technology, represents the essential role Somernova’s tenants play in fighting the harmful ecological effects of energy extraction and in advancing clean energy technology. ” (quote from “Mural showcasing the science and impact of climate change at Somernova unveiled” The Somerville Times, June 2024)

““As an artist, my work aims to bridge the gap between complex scientific topics and the general public,” Tuttle said. “My new mural at Somernova highlights the connectivity between our local ecosystems and the role of innovative, clean technologies that aid in the preservation of biodiversity.”“(quote from “Mural showcasing the science and impact of climate change at Somernova unveiled” The Somerville Times, June 2024)
