Delighted to finally visit this annual outdoor exhibit, I hope that it will return each spring for another 25 years at least! Next year I vow to visit as soon as it starts and to revisit several times before it ends. Here are some quickly selected photos along with quotes and links about the art, artists, ideas, interactions, and attractions in “This is ART.”

Dan Rocha, Olie
“We have been producing exhibitions together since 1999 – originally at Allandale Farm in conjunction with Brookline Artists Open Studios – and consistently adding additional exhibitions and venues. All members all share in the annual determination of priorities and planning of the exhibits and receive feedback and stimulation from one another throughout the year.” (quote from about Studios Without Walls ,Bette Ann Libby, Founder/Artist Studios Without Walls)

Rachel Shatil, Wall of Visibility
“Studios Without Walls is a Brookline-based collaborative group of sculptors and conceptual artists who produce exhibitions of art in outdoor and public settings. We emphasize our community ties in both our exhibitions and programs of educational outreach. Our purpose is to expand and educate audiences to appreciate, participate in, and become enriched by site-responsive sculpture, installation, and conceptual art.” (quote from about Studios Without Walls, Bette Ann Libby, Founder/Artist Studios Without Walls )

“We seek to project a full and lively presence, increasing public visibility of creative thinking at work. We emphasize creative dialogue with the community-at-large, continuing to investigate opportunities for public art and elevating public discourse on the arts. “(quote from about Studios Without Walls, Bette Ann Libby, Founder/Artist Studios Without Walls)

“In collaboration with Studios Without Walls, 19 Gateway Artists have painted outdoor pole banners, which are being displayed on roadways throughout Brookline, in conjunction with This is Art, Studio Without Wall’s 25th Anniversary exhibition. “ ( quote from Gateway Arts, SWW Banners)

“Gateway Arts supports nearly 100 artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health diagnoses, brain injuries, and other neurodiverse conditions. Our artists come from diverse backgrounds, each bringing with them an interest in creating art and a distinct perspective to share with the world.” (quote from Gateway Arts, mission) Gateway banners alerted me to the exhibit, so they are essential to this post!

I love all of this but wish it were not outdoors. I worry about birds flying into reflective surfaces or getting trapped in the undulating bird net with colors woven in. Sometimes beautiful things can be lethal to small creatures.
