Signs and Connections Grow on Cambridge Common throughout Festival Organized by MASS 50501

Here are photos, quotes, links, and notes from a recent MASS 50501 event that truly engaged me in sustaining ways. Visual art, along with music, poetry, free food, volunteer energy, careful organizing, and good weather, made this a fruitful festival.

“On August 2, we invite the people of Massachusetts to join us for a festival of nonviolent resistance from 12pm – 4pm on Cambridge Common with art, live music, education, and ice cream, where we can build and strengthen the community networks we will all need to channel our rage into nonviolent action.” (quote from MASS 50501 notice about event )

“Learn from Mass 50501 and others about the strategy of nonviolent civil resistance and tactics of noncooperation. Connect with local groups doing vital community work, from organizing mutual aid for those in need to fighting for immigrants’ rights.” (quote from MASS 50501 notice about event )

Several photos below focus on a mural* designed to include people’s responses to one key question throughout the afternoon. Please view this growing mural as an example of the many Cambridge Common sites where people continually responded with creativity and purpose. *titled “What’s Your Why, 2025″

At least two hundred answers to the question had become part of the mural when I last viewed it around 3:30 that afternoon.

Several other signs from the festival can be viewed on Signs of the Times, 2025 a new ART OUTDOORS page to keep track of posters, banners, and notices from events in response to current issues in this country and the world.
