Gallery 344 in Cambridge Offers Resources, Activities, and Insights that Highlight Artist’s Role in Playground Design

Going to the gallery got me going back to my posts and unposted photos of Mitch Ryerson’s art outdoors, plus planning to explore more places with his art. But my goal today is to share notes, quotes, and links that will quickly get you to this enlightening exhibit, or at least to online resources that connect you with Mitch Ryerson’s creative work!

“See how play spaces take shape, from first sketch to finished structures, in a hands-on exhibition of playground design by Cambridge artist Mitch Ryerson at Cambridge Arts’ Gallery 344, 344 Broadway, Cambridge, from Sept. 21 to Dec. 31, 2026.” (quote from Cambridge Arts, Gallery 344 )

“The exhibition “Joyful Anarchy” brings Ryerson’s playground work indoors through models, sketches, and full-scale pieces, including a centerpiece structure on which visitors are invited to play. Ryerson’s swings, benches, marimbas, and sculptural play spaces turn parks and schoolyards into places to build, balance, listen, and gather. “(quote from Cambridge Arts, Gallery 344 )

“Ryerson’s efforts to honor the value of play extend beyond our community. The cube play structure at the heart of the exhibition was designed and built by Ryerson as part of “Portable Play,” a collaborative project of local designers and fabricators to create play structures that can be packed flat for easy shipping to war-scarred places where children have lost safe spaces to play. “(quote from Cambridge Arts, Gallery 344 )

“Mitch Ryerson is an artist, designer, and craftsman specializing in wood structures and furniture. He began his career building wooden boats in Maine, and then attended Boston University’s Program in Artisanry, receiving his BAA in Furniture Design in 1982.….His work has been exhibited extensively and is in numerous private and public collections including the Fuller Craft Museum, the Mint Museum, the Boston Public Library, and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Ryerson’s many commissions for Boston-area parks and schools are enjoyed by thousands of children and adults each year.” (quote from Ryerson Design)
