BLUE PRINTING ALONG THE CHARLES: Exploring Art & the Environment through Cyanotype at Magazine Beach Nature Center in Cambridge

As Artists in Residence for 2023 at Mass Audubon’s Magazine Beach Nature Center in Cambridge,* Liz Shepherd and Suszanne Moseley created a unique, multipurpose tent, rich in images of local plants and animals. Their focus through the traditional photographic process called cyanotype ( or blueprinting) reveals an amazing array of hues from deep blue to bright white. *668 Memorial Drive

POP UP STUDIO & PUBLIC ART “For the first part of their residency, Liz and Suzanne have created a tent draped in large cyanotypes printed on fabric. They combined images of birds collected from Mass. Audubon and plant material found in Magazine Beach Park.  This pop-up tent is a work of temporary public art and a space for creativity; when not used for workshop, the public is invited to enjoy it as a shade structure and hang-out spot.* ( quote from Blueprinting Along the Charles, Spark Art, Cecily Miller) *during events at Magazine Beach Park Nature Center through September

Blueprinting Along the Charles The project received funding from the Mass Cultural Council and Magazine Beach Partners.

Both artists have given cyanotype workshops for school groups, after-school nature study, and local people (luckily including me) who could sign up for scheduled offerings. Exhilarated by the workshop and the artwork, I hope this post conveys the compelling qualities of Blueprinting Along the Charles!
